Hiking Boots and Shoes

Jonathan Hanson of Outside magazine says, “Not so long ago, a new pair of boots came with a five-page care-and-feeding manual. You had the break-in period, the sock strategy, yadda yadda. My, how we’ve changed.”

My, how have we. After applying half a jar of Sno-Seal, those old leather babies felt like they weighed roughly 25 pounds apiece. Manufacturers thought hiking wasn’t meant for those who couldn’t stoically endure pain, evidently. The boots did what they were supposed to do, though - supported your ankles, kept your feet dry and allowed you to drop large logs on your toes without noticing.

These days, manufacturers are still concerning themselves with durability and performance, but comfort is also a primary concern. As Hanson says, “Manufacturers have become so adept at combining supportive and protective insoles and outsoles with instantly comfortable and weatherproof uppers that…it’s easy to forget you even have them on.”

And he’s right. Take a look at a few hiking boot reviews and see if you don’t agree.

North Face Down Vest

For a long time I considered getting a down vest, and the decision was between the EMS vest and The North Face Nuptse vest. I decided on the latter. The vest is made of 700 fill goose down, which makes it extremely warm, and very puffy and comfortable. The fit is absolutely great and the size seems true to what I normally would choose. It comes with to zippered pockets, and a nice little stash pocket on the inside. This is also zippered. I loved this detail. The color scheme I think is awesome with a nice dark grey top over black. It comes in different colors as well.

I have now used it under my main jacket, on top of a sweater, on top of a fleece, even indoors on top of a tshirt. Its super comfortable, and I am so happy I bought it. Definitely my best clothing buy this year.

If feels like having a poofy comforter on all the time!

I worn it in very cold weather, just on top of a fleece jacket, and not been cold in any way. I would definitely go for this if you are looking for a warm comfortable vest.

Hunter Wellies

I have wanted tall rubber boots made by Hunter Boots, a company in Scotland, for many years. Not only are they stylish and come in many great, bright colours as well as the traditional hunter green colour, but they are extremely practical in the part of the country where I live. There are very few occasions when I purchase shoes or boots that are both functional and great looking, and my new Wellies, as these tall Hunter rubber boots are called, are both. My mom found the colour I wanted, called pumpkin, on http://www.zappos.com, and she had a lot of trouble finding them. Several websites carry them, and you can also get them from the Hunter Boots website from Britain, but most of the websites that ship to North America are either sold out, or are ridiculously expensive. My mom paid $115, plus shipping, but these boots are my very favourite thing right now, and I only wish I could add a picture to my review.

The rubber Hunter boots, called Wellingtons or Wellies, were once popular with the horsey, rich set in the UK. They became popular in North America
when several actresses were photographed wearing them in the past few years. What made me want some is that I live on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada, where it rains all the time and where any nice, leather shoes and boots get wrecked very quickly and are dangerous to where. I also spend several months every year in Alberta, which is very cold rather than wet. I wanted wellies so that I could wear them in the rain in BC, and put thick socks in them and where them in the cold and snow in Alberta. I also did a bit of online research, and found the colour I wanted, a very light orange, almost a burnt orange colour. My mom gave them to me on Christmas day, and I was overjoyed.

I was able to try out my new wellies right away, because it rained constantly for a week around Christmas. My feet remained dry and very warm, even when I was wearing just thin socks or even tights. And of course, they look great, with the Hunter name on the top and side buckles. I raked leaves for over an hour in the pouring rain, and the only part of my body that was not wet was my feet and lower legs. They are wide enough to allow plenty of room to tuck in pants or wear very thick socks as well, and I also received ‘wellie socks’, which are very thick, insulated, long socks for colder weather. I had to travel to Calgary, Alberta, a few days ago, and it was about -28 C for a day or two. I used my wellie socks for the first time, and just as I suspected, my feet remained dry and very warm when I wore my wellies. Everywhere I go, I get comments on them, but the fact that my feet will never be cold or wet is wonderful, and I absolutely love my Hunter boots. I highly recommend
them to anyone who wants cool boots, and especially to those who live in a wet or a cold climate.
